Library Resource Review -

Family members have told me that this is the one book that they have been looking for. "I am not sick, I donÂ’t need help!  - How to help someone with mental illness accept treatment " provides the information that family members or supporters need. In this book Dr Amador outlines his “LEAP” approach for getting someone to both accept and stay in treatment. Dr Amador comes to this from two different perspectives. He had a brother with schizophrenia (who, unfortunately, passed away in a car accident) and spent many years supporting his brother. He understands the emotional struggle that family members face when their love one refuses treatment and ends up having to be treated against their will. Dr. Amador is also a psychologist and has based this approach on evidenced-based practices. He feels that the treatment team includes the consumer, the family and mental health care providers. He first explains why individuals with a mental illness have poor insight. He then outlines his technique which avoids the less-effective strategy of attempting to improve the personÂ’s insight into their illness and, instead, focuses on getting the person to adhere to treatment. He walks the reader through the steps of LEAP-Listen, Empathize, Agree and Partner. He uses real-life examples from other individuals who have an illness and families which makes the information easy to understand. Dr. Amador also provides some examples of things family members can say to the person with the illness when they feel like they just donÂ’t know what to say. The strategies outlined in the book are practical and relevant for those who have a loved one with a mental illness.
