Resource Library

The BCCS office has a number of resources for family or friends of individuals diagnosed with a mental illness.  There are free print resources and some books and DVDs that can be borrowed.  The resources cover subjects such as schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, depression, how families can cope with mental illness, dealing with difficult children, etc.

Leah can mail resources to you if you are out of town. Please contact her to make arrangements.

Strengthening Families Together

Strengthening Families Together is a 10-session group for families and friends, which provides information, skill-building, and support.

You will learn:

  • The different types of mental illnesses
  • The medications and treatments for mental illness
  • How to cope with and support your loved one living with a mental illness

Support Groups for Caregivers

The Support Groups are open to caregivers of individuals with any diagnosis of mental illness (not just schizophrenia).  The information and support provided by the Support Groups is helpful no matter what the person you care about has for a diagnosis.

Terrace Support Group for Caregivers: Meets the third Tuesday of every month(except July, August, and December) at the Stepping Stone Clubhouse which is located at 102-4450 Greig Avenue Terrace BC from 7:30-9:00 pm

Prince Rupert Support Group for Caregivers: Meets the last Monday of every month at the C.O.R.E.(Community Outreach, Rehabilitation and Education) Center.  The center is located at 378-3rd Avenue.  The meetings run from 7:00 to 8:30 pm.

Kitimat Support Group for Caregivers:  Meets the last Monday of every month at the Mountainview Horizon House which is located at 564 Mountainview Square.  The meetings run from 7:00 to 8:30 pm.

Support groups for individuals who have a mental illness are coordinated through the local Adult Mental Health and Addictions office.

Partnership

This presentation would be suitable for groups such as college or university students, service groups, or employees at a staff meeting.

A Partnership Education presentation is a panel of three to five guest speakers - a person with a psychiatric diagnosis, a family member, and a mental health professional. The three guests are presented as a team and each describes their own personal experience with mental illness.
