Forms

Income Tax Form T-2201     http://www.cra-arc.gc.ca/E/pbg/tf/t2201/t2201-05e.pdf

If your loved one has a mental illness (or any other disability), he or she may be eligible to claim a deduction in his taxable income.  If the disabled person has no taxable income, the amount of the deduction can be transferred to a primary caregiver.  The disabled person does not have to live in the caregiver’s home to be considered eligible for this deduction.

In order to be eligible for this deduction, Income Tax Form T-2201 must be filed and sent to Revenue Canada.  This deduction is retroactive for several years, so it could be well worth the time and effort to get this form completed and filed if you think your loved one may qualify.   A hard copy of this form is available from the BCSS office here in Smithers, or you can use the link above to make a copy for yourself.
